Southern Exposure
What is Southern Exposure?
Southern Exposure is an opportunity for groups from around the Country to come experience urban missions in New Orleans. We will “custom fit” missions and work experiences to teams from churches, colleges, and other organizations from around the globe. This is an opportunity to to experience urban ministry in a unique context and seeing what the South has to offer.
As the program grows alongside the CENTER, we will be looking for “exchange” partnerships. We believe our responsiblity is not only to provide experiences for those who want to come, but also for those who are willing to go. As New Orleanians get to know us, we want to provide opportunities for church groups, colleges and other organizations in this community to connect with ministries and other work around the US and the globe. We specifically want to do this for those living at and under the poverty line.
Poverty does not lend itself to travel, but our hope is to expose the lower-income population of New Orleans to experiences that they would, generally speaking, have no access to. There is a cycle of poverty that the CENTER wants to be a part of breaking. We want to see New Orleanians become more educated through exposure to continued schooling, one another and life experiences. Southern Exposure is our name for that education.
Why Bother?
Our cities our growing and yet there are fewer and fewer churches or ministries engaging these areas. We believe that part of the reason urban areas are being overlooked is because it seems scary or daunting. In the case of New Orleans it seems that many have simply written off the city because of Katrina or because it is a place known for vice. The problem is, the need in our cities is great and the workers are indeed few.
We bother because urban ministry is challenging, however, it is not impossible. We want to show that with a willing spirit almost anyone can serve in an urban context. Southern Exposure allows us to not only bless the city through visiting teams but also bless the visiting teams by giving them an experience they won’t soon forget.
